Breakthrough is Fighting For the Girls

Breakthrough Cancer Research are Fighting for the Girls

Fota Island Resort joined Breakthrough Cancer Research to launch their ‘Fight for the Girls’ campaign taking place this autumn to raise vital funds for research into women’s cancer. The campaign is asking gyms across Ireland to hold a class in aid of cancer research this autumn and join the fight against cancers affecting women. All proceeds will go towards finding new treatment options for the leading cancers affecting women, such as ovarian cancer, the fourth most common cancer in women in Ireland.

Spa Marketing and Reservations Coordinator, Ciara Fitzgerald was delighted to get involved again this year, “Fota Fitness here at Fota Island Resort is delighted to be a part of the Fight for the Girls campaign again this year, there was a great response to it last year. It’s a fun way to make a contribution to the great cause. The whole team at Fota and our class members have tremendous respect for Breakthrough Cancer Research and for many of us, it’s a personal decision to be involved. And who better than our super tough Bootcampers to join the fight against cancer!

Orla Dolan, Fundraising Director with Breakthrough states, ‘With 360 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year and 276 women dying from the disease, more treatment options are urgently needed. While there have been many advances in the diagnosis and treatment of many other cancers, ovarian cancer has had little improvement in its prognosis over the last 20 years. That’s why campaigns such as Fight for the Girls and the support of Fota Island Resort & Spa are so important as we need to do more to ensure that women have more treatment options and a better survival rate for this disease’.

Orla continued ‘Whether you are doing it for your mom, auntie, grandmother, sister, friend or girlfriend, let’s all join the fight this autumn and raise much needed funds for research into cancers affecting women. There are many ways you can get involved and support our fight against cancer - Holding a fitness classes in exchange for a donation or add €2 from your classes such as Boxercise or Spinning for the months of October and November.’

Breakthrough is leading the way with research into cancers with poor prognosis such as ovarian, pancreatic, lung and oesophageal.  They have already progressed seven treatments progress from their research laboratory to clinical trial and work closely with multiple hospitals to ensure their research is responding to the needs of patients with cancers that do not respond to conventional therapies.
