Challenge yourself for Cancer Research this Summer

The Kerryway Fundraising Walk is an annual fundraising event that has gone from strength to strength for the Cork based cancer research charity over the last twelve years. To date the walk has raised over €670,000 for cancer research in Ireland with funds going to Breakthrough Cancer Research to support their continued research into cancer treatments for poor prognosis cancers, such as pancreatic, lung and oesophageal.

The Kerryway Fundraising Walk will take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th July in Sneem, Kerry and walkers can register for one, two or all three days at The guided walks, which will be based around the central location of Sneem, will combine impressive mountain views, dramatic peaks and glens, wild moorlands, wooded paths and lakes along the Kerry Way trails. Challenging but fun, the great camaraderie on the route adds to the spectacular setting and ensures a truly memorable experience in the Kingdom.

Speaking about the importance of the walk, pharmacist and regular walk participant Mary Fitzsimons, states, “I doubt there is any family in Ireland that hasn’t had someone affected by cancer. My mother was on 61 when she died of lung cancer, after four months after diagnosis. Working as a pharmacist, I fully appreciate the importance of constantly researching new drugs and new routes of administration. As a result of cancer research, treatment has advanced greatly in the recent years. The walk is a really good way to raise funds for cancer research while also enjoying the walk along the way.

Breakthrough Cancer Research is leading the way with research into cancers with poor prognosis, having already seen seven treatments progress from the Cork Cancer Research Centre to clinical trial, with over 750 patients treated. Breakthrough researcher’s work closely with multiple hospitals in the Munster Region to ensure their research is responding to the needs of patients with cancers that do not respond to conventional therapies.

General Manager at the Cork Cancer Research Centre, Declan Soden highlights the significance of the Kerryway Fundraising Walk to cancer research, “The money raised each year from the Walk is vital as it helps us to provide world class research into poor prognosis cancers. The momentum from events such as the Kerry Way Walk provides the drive and impetus for breakthroughs to be made in cancer research and for improvements to be achieved in the quality of life for all cancer patients.”
