Evaluation of a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme on the quality of life of survivors living with secondary cancer

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a group-based programme developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues that teach formal and informal mindfulness practices that have demonstrated effectiveness for a wide variety of physical and psychological health problems and ongoing life challenges. The Cork ARC Cancer Support MBSR course follows the same, well-respected approach taught at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (CFM) and is taught by a qualified MBSR teacher trained by the CFM.

Over 30 years of extensive research on MBSR has shown many positive health benefits of mindfulness practice. Some of those benefits that are particularly relevant for this population include Increased ability to manage anxiety, depression, and low mood, Improved sleep, Ability to handle stressful situations more effectively, Increased ability to relax, Reductions in pain levels, and an enhanced ability to cope with the pain that may not go away Enhanced immunity. We will investigate the impact of MBSR on up to 50 people living with secondary cancer.
